A Design Film Festival

The first in Asia, since 2010

INFORMATION

Conceived in 2010 by Anonymous as a film festival dedicated to design, A Design Film Festival (DFF) launched in Singapore and has since travelled to over 10 cities globally including Bangkok, Taipei, Berlin and Portland, with over 100,000 attendees.

The festival is a curated collection of films on design and its subcultures, including architecture, fashion design, product design, urban design, photography, contemporary art, sign-painting, craft and more.

The festival has been featured in international and local publications including Monocle, Wallpaper*, Silverkris, Time Out, It's Nice That, Wall Street Journal, The Business Times, The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao and more.

About the Festival

On design and its subcultures

CURATORS

DFF was created in 2010 by Anonymous, a small (tiny really) design studio. The studio divides its time by half — 50% on designing for clients and the other 50% on studio projects such as A Design Film Festival, Bracket and the new Foodcine.ma in 2016.

CURATORIAL DIRECTION

Well, it's about design and its subcultures. Design is a broad subject that continues to evolve and be redefined constantly. The list goes on and on. This year, we've pored over 150 films (up from 120 last year) to select the 10 films presented this year. What makes the cut? Films that are relevant, entertaining and timely.

INDEPENDENTLY FUNDED EVENT

DFF remains an independent event without government funding or financial support from major corporate sponsorships. The support from our creative partners, collaborators and attendees like you make the Festival possible.

The Festival's sustainability is completely dependent on ticket and merchandise sales. All revenue goes into the cost of operating the event including venue and equipment rental, screening fees, film rating fees, shipping fees, print production, manpower and more.

International editions

As the first film event in Asia dedicated to design, A Design Film Festival has since travelled to over 10 cities globally, with over 100,000 attendees — Bangkok (2010, 2015), Berlin (2010), Taipei (2010), Kaohsiung (2010), Kuala Lumpur (2012, 2015), Portland (2012), Latvia (2013), Seoul (2013), Mumbai (2015), Shanghai (2015), Beijing (2015), Jakarta (2015), and in 2015, New York.

What’s New

Brace yourselves

DFF WORLD TOUR

For the first time, DFF will make its global presence in three cities - Singapore, and two travelling editions in Bangkok and New York, along with private screenings in five regional cities including Mumbai, Jakarta, Shanghai, Beijing and Kuala Lumpur.

DFF Bangkok, 18 - 26 July 2015
DFF New York, 08 - 09 October 2015

NEW VENUE

This year, DFF will be held in two venues, one of which is the biggest for the festival yet — a 977 seater at the newly reopened Capitol Theatre on the 5 and 6 of September and at Shaw Theatres Lido on the 11, 12 and 13 of September.

DFFSG2015 is the first film festival to be held at Capitol Theatre since its reopening.

INTERNATIONAL PREMIERES

From over 150 submissions (an increase from 120 last year), 10 films that reflect the zeitgeist of the design landscape have been selected this year. Featuring seven Asia Premieres, two Singapore Premieres and one Southeast Asia Premiere.

Woot(!) for Singapore.

THEME: DEPTH OF WIDTH

Depth of Width explores the roles of generalists and specialists in today's design ecosystem. As the boundaries between disciplines dissolve, so has the traditional specialisations within design fallen apart. The patchwork branding graphics reflects the cross-pollination of creative disciplines and the increasingly multi-faceted roles of a designer.

DFF X SUPERMAMA

Produced in a first-ever collaboration with design label Supermama, this year's Festival Merchandise is a series of 10 traditional Japanese tabi socks featuring the branding graphics of DFFSG2015. Made in Nara, Japan, each of the 10 designs is based on the multi-faceted roles of a designer such as 'Master of One', 'Jack of All Trades', and more.

DFF X SINGAPORE AIRLINES

From November till December 2015, the Festival will take to the sky with a curation of 10 films from the Festival's 2015 official selection screened exclusively onboard KrisWorld, Singapore Airlines' award-winning inflight entertainment system. This is the second consecutive year that the Festival is partnering with Singapore Airlines.

Foodcine.ma Teaser

In 2016, we'll be launching Foodcine.ma — a film festival on food in Singapore. Along the way, as we review films on design, we've come across some really cool films on food that deserves a film event of its own. Our friends at TMRRW Studio have been working on a video teaser that will premiere at DFFSG2015.
